Parashat Bo brings us to the most terrifying—and holy—night in the Torah. The night the firstborn died. The night the gods of Egypt were judged. The night redemption finally broke through darkness. “For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night… and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments.” Exodus 12:12 This was not just punishment. It was a cosmic showdown. And it wasn’t random who lived and who died. The Torah is clear: Life was preserved where blood marked the door. “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” Exodus 12:13 The first day of Pesach is the day of the death of the firstborn. And Scripture repeatedly calls Yeshua the Firstborn: Firstborn among many brothers. Firstborn of all creation. Firstborn from the dead. Death strikes the firstborn in Egypt— and yet, the Firstborn becomes the source of life. Jewish tradition adds a stunning layer. The Mechilta teaches that when God saw the blood on the doorposts, He was not only seeing the blood of the lamb… He was seeing the blood of the binding of Yitzchak. “When I see the blood — I see the blood of the binding of Isaac.” Avraham’s willingness to offer his firstborn stood as a merit for Israel’s firstborn. A life offered… so other lives could be spared. Exchange. Substitution. Redemption through blood. The Targum goes even further, calling the blood a ransom—like circumcision—a sign that blocks the angel of death from having power. And then something unexpected happens. Israel does not leave Egypt alone. “A mixed multitude went up with them.” Exodus 12:38 Not everyone walking out was born Israel. Some were Egyptians. Some were others enslaved by Egypt. Why were they spared? Midrash gives a parable: A king throws a celebration for his son. Anyone who loves the son may enter. Anyone who hates him is destroyed with the enemies. That night, it was enough to stand with Israel. It was enough to choose a side. Redemption spilled outward. And then the Torah says something mysterious: “It is a night of watching unto the LORD… for all generations.” Exodus 12:42 Why is this night so important? The Targum reveals the secret. Four nights are inscribed before God. The first night: Creation — when light shattered darkness. The second night: Avraham — when covenant was born in uncertainty. The third night: Egypt — when firstborn were judged and Israel was freed. The fourth night: Still coming — when God will reveal Himself again to end exile and bring final redemption. Pesach is not just memory. It is rehearsal. Every Pesach remembers a past redemption… and anticipates a future one. Bo teaches us that redemption comes through blood, through choice, through alignment, through covenant. Darkness always comes first. But God has a habit of turning night into light. And the final night… is still ahead. 🕍✡️🕎🍷🔯🍞🕍✡️🕎🍷🔯🍞 Benei Avraham is a Traditional Jewish Congregation, Inspired by Mashiach. We help Jews who believe in Yeshua do a formal return to Judaism.
