Today, the focus is on the western part of the archipelago, Isabela Island, one of the newer islands. After an adventure through a volcanic island of "Aa" lava, the team headed to the Darwin Research Station in an open-air bus — no doors or windows. There, we observed Galápagos Tortoises and learned about the National Park’s efforts to conserve the species. After lunch on the Galaxy, we boarded the bus and crossed various vegetation zones, including lava fields, tall tree-fern areas, and low scrub, until reaching the end of the transport line. We gathered our water and cameras and started a 45-minute, steep, slippery hike up to the caldera rim. At the top, we were surrounded by clouds. The caldera is filled with black lava, making it look like a black lake from the rim. Spanning 5 miles by 6 miles, the caldera is 300 feet deep and ranks as the second largest in the world. We returned to the Galaxy, had dinner, and reflected on our physical and mental states. We felt mentally refreshed but physically exhausted.
