2026 01 25 [I AM WHO I AM] Exodus 3:1,2,12,14 Hymn 312 Exodus 3: 1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites; ‘ I AM has sent me to you.’”(NIV) [I AM WHO I AM 나는 나다] We believe that God has given us all things we need. But we sometimes find it hard to believe when our lives are not easy. Even in times of happiness and plenty, we think we need something more, but it never comes to us or we fail to recognize what we already have. Moses had lost everything: his status as the prince of Egypt, his property, family, and friends. Now, eighty years old, he was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, far away from home in the desert. He might have thought he would never be happy again. Moses saw a miracle: ‘the bush was on fire, it did not burn up.’ This miracle overshadows the "burning resources" we rely on—things we possess and the identities we claim ('I have, I am'). This is profoundly different from God’s self-existent identity, ‘I AM WHO I AM,’ which requires no burning resources. Furthermore, we introduce ourselves to others by things such as family, jobs, age, birthplace, and even the pride we acquire and live by. But God does not need anything at all, even 'burning resources.' All other creatures are links; this [God] is the staple from which they all hang. All things are derived, and therefore limited and changeable, like a flammable bush. 1) God does not have to be proud of Himself or reveal His identity through all things He made. The bush on fire did not burn up because God’s identity is not verified by the bush. He reveals Himself to the people who truly know Him—a God who needs nothing at all because He creates all things. After revealing Himself to us, God speaks about making our lives needful and meaningful. Between the ‘bush’ (Hebrew: seneh) and Horeb, the other name for ‘Sinai,’ there is a sense of adumbration (foreshadowing) in the midst of the desert when Moses talked to God. 2) Whenever God wants to speak to someone personally, He often strips away what they possess, bringing them to a desolate place like the desert where nobody can help. But we sometimes struggle to have this faith. Give us the faith so we are always confident to live by. Help us let our mind hold Jesus only.
