9/27/1969 Tigers at Red Sox highlights Denny McLain wins 24th, lifts Detroit in battle for 2d RE-RUN

This is an 18-minute video of highlights from the Sept. 27, 1969 Major League Baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and the Red Sox in Boston, won by the Tigers, 2-1. It is from the WHDH TV in Boston broadcast, with Ken Coleman and Ned Martin on play by play and Johnny Pesky on analysis. The Tigers' Denny McLain goes the route in a nail-biter in his final start of the season to pick up his 24th win against nine losses; McLain and the Orioles' Mike Cuellar (23-11) tied for the American League Cy Young Award. Also, the teams entered this late-season affair at Fenway Park with identical 86-71 records in the battle for second place in the AL behind the rampaging Orioles. However, including this loss, the Red Sox went 1-4 to finish the year, and ended up in third, three games behind the Tigers and 22 in back of Baltimore. During the first inning, in which he allowed a run, Boston starter Vicente Romo hurt his elbow. Young Bill Lee came on to throw seven outstanding innings, the only run he allowed coming on a passed ball, yet he was the tough-luck loser. The only run off the quick-working McLain came on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Notes: Rico Petrocelli, in the midst of an MVP-caliber season, nearly hit his 40th homer in the ninth. He ended up getting No. 40 two days later in Washington off the immortal Jim Shellenback ... Yastrzemski's throw to nail Tom Tresh in the fifth (04:40) was just incredible ... I wonder if all the Foster Grant employees in the stands were wearing their Foster Grants ... This game has been out there. And I personaly have had the footage up as part of one big file.
