In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy presents the gross anatomy of the spinal cord and spinal nerves, highlighting their structural organization and functional relationships. We begin by examining the overall layout of the spinal cord within the vertebral canal, including its regional divisions—cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal—and how these correspond to the origin of spinal nerves. The lecture also covers the enlargements of the spinal cord related to upper and lower limb innervation, as well as the conus medullaris, cauda equina, and filum terminale. We then focus on the spinal cord's external features and cross-sectional anatomy, identifying the anterior median fissure, posterior median sulcus, gray matter horns, and surrounding white matter columns. Each region of the gray matter is discussed in relation to its motor, sensory, and autonomic functions. The lecture also explores the 31 pairs of spinal nerves, their roots, dorsal root ganglia, and branching patterns, emphasizing the functional differences between dorsal and ventral roots.
