While melatonin supplements are found over-the-counter in almost any health food store or pharmacy, there is conflicting evidence regarding the safety of long-term supplementation. When I speak of “safety,” I am primarily referring to the potential down-regulation or inhibition of the body’s own melatonin production with long-term melatonin supplementation. Some experts report that when this happens, the body will stop both producing AND responding to its own melatonin. If this happens, the “hormone of darkness,” and perhaps the most important hormone in the body, may become non-responsive. On the other side of the equation, there is science suggesting that these long-term side effects of melatonin do not exist. In one meta-analysis of more than 16,000 subjects from 19 studies, melatonin was not shown to be less effective with continued use. When I come across science on both sides of the aisle that found opposite results, I suggest to be more safe than sorry. That said, OTC melatonin supplementation is very safe for short-term circadian sleep resetting and for jet-lag. However, dosage is very important.
