Welcome to week 34 of pregnancy — the countdown is officially on! You’re now in your eighth month and well into your third trimester, which means your baby is putting on the final touches before their big day. In this video, we’ll cover everything you need to know about being 34 weeks pregnant, including your baby’s growth, your changing body, and the important steps to take to prepare for labor, delivery, and bringing your newborn home. At this stage, your baby is about the size of a small pumpkin, weighing around 2-2.3kg and measuring nearly 42cm long. Inside your womb, your baby is practicing essential life skills — like breathing movements, sucking, and even blinking — to prepare for life outside the womb. Their brain is developing rapidly, their lungs are maturing, and they’re beginning to gain that adorable layer of baby fat that makes newborns so cuddly. Baby Development at 34 Weeks Pregnant? Your baby’s brain is forming billions of new connections every day — supporting movement, learning, and sensory growth. The lungs are almost fully developed, but your little one is still practicing breathing in the amniotic fluid. Their eyes can now open and close, responding to light and darkness. Fingernails, toenails, and tiny eyelashes are fully formed! You might notice stronger and more rhythmic movements as your baby runs out of room to stretch. Common Pregnancy Symptoms at 34 Weeks? Every woman experiences pregnancy differently, but here are some of the most typical symptoms at this point in your journey: Increased pelvic pressure: Your baby may start to “drop” into your pelvis, especially if it’s your first pregnancy. Braxton Hicks contractions: Practice contractions become more frequent — your body’s way of rehearsing for real labor. Shortness of breath: Your growing uterus is pressing on your diaphragm, making deep breaths more difficult. Back pain and hip discomfort: As your ligaments loosen, your body prepares for birth — try prenatal stretches and gentle yoga. Swelling in your feet and ankles (edema): Elevate your legs and drink plenty of water to help reduce swelling. Trouble sleeping: Finding a comfortable position can be tough — use a pregnancy pillow and try sleeping on your left side. Leaking colostrum: Your breasts may start producing early milk — a sign your body is preparing for breastfeeding. How to Prepare for Labor and Delivery? Pack your hospital bag — Include essentials for you, your baby, and your partner: comfy clothes, toiletries, baby onesies, diapers, and important documents. Write your birth plan — Discuss pain management, delivery preferences, and who you want in the room with your healthcare provider. Pre-register at your hospital or birthing center — Save time when the big day arrives! Take a childbirth or breastfeeding class — These can be incredibly helpful for new parents. Prepare your home — Set up your baby’s nursery, wash baby clothes, and install the car seat correctly. Stock up on postpartum supplies — Pads, nursing bras, and comfortable recovery clothes will make the first few weeks smoother. Self-Care and Emotional Health at 34 Weeks Pregnant?
