The Annual CAIRIBU Meeting brings together a diverse and collaborative community of researchers, clinicians, and trainees dedicated to advancing the field of benign urology. Rooted in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)-funded Urology O’Brien Centers and expanded through the inclusion of P20 Urology Exploratory Centers, P20 Urology FORWARD Centers, K12 Career Development Programs, and other initiatives, CAIRIBU fosters cross-disciplinary engagement to accelerate discovery and innovation. Dr. Hanneke Verstegen's primary research interest is to study the neural control of bladder function. This underexplored field will benefit from a better understanding of how the nervous system controls bladder detrusor muscle and sphincter activity. She is currently a lead investigator in several research projects that focus on identifying neural populations involved in successful bladder functioning, their regulation by upstream targets and circuits, and whether inhibitory input to this void-triggering pathway may allow urinary continence. These studies aim to better understand how forebrain, brainstem and spinal inputs converge in the control of bladder filling and voiding.
