Christmas Day 2024 and were still cruising. Llangollen Basin Now if your not an old hand in the history of the inland waterways of the UK you’d be forgiven in thinking Llangollen Marina was as old as the canal itself possibly being used as a wharf for the unloading and loading of goods for the town of Llangollen. Well you’d be very wrong it was actually built in 2005 by British Waterways the custodians of the network at that time. Its was constructed to help with congestion caused by a lack of moorings. Nowadays there are around 33 berths with pontoons and electric hook up. Water bins etc are part of the facilities provided. The costs at the time of recording which was dec 20204 were as follows 4 hours free 24 hours £13 48 hrs £26 All payments are to be made at the wharf cafe a couple of hundred yards from the basin. Horseshoe falls The Basin itself isn’t the terminus of the Llangollen Canal. A short section of shadow cut takes you al the way to the end (or beginning depending on which way your heading) of the Golly. Only the horse drawn boats are allowed up this section they weren’t running on the day we were there I would have loved to have a go in one of them. We decided to have a wander down to the falls as the alternative was a climb up the big hill to the castle. Not long into the walk we happened across a car Museum. The Llangollen Car Museum is a privately owned collection of cars and is only ope the first 7 days of each month I’ve left the number of the museum here just incase you want to check it out for yourselves. Alas we were unable to have a gander round as we were not staying into the new year. A little further on there’s a little iron bridge over the canal which takes you up the hill not entirely sure where we didn’t manage to get a look as Debbie wouldn’t go anywhere near it. The hotel further up has an interesting bridge spanning the River Dee. The metal straps secured to the rocky hill side still didn’t reassure Debbie of its safety. At last we reach the horseshoe falls, I know I take the Mickey about industrial structures looking better than nature but this actually doesn’t shout industrial. Completed in 1808 Thomas Telford may not have envisioned how it would look today. Its a 140m horseshoe shaped weir which diverts water from the river dee to the canal ultimately feeding into the Shropshire union canal at hurelston junction. 12 million gallons af water pass under that little stone building every day. Its now part of a UNESCO world heritage site. After the recent storms a lot of trees had been washed onto the weir not sure if they get cleaned up or are left to wash down river. We walked back towards Llangollen there is a steam train which runs regular trips but alas not on this day. After the brisk walk we stopped at a local pub for coffee and headed back t NB Laura passing by an interesting shop. If Tango carries on with his bad temper we might just call on their services. Debbie would never forgive me. And that was our Christmas we hope you and yours all had a restful time over the holidays & managed to catch up with friends and family. Enjoy A bit more about us.
