UNESCO Intercultural Dialogue for Conflict Transformation Briefs Series

The online launch of the Intercultural Dialogue for Conflict Transformation briefs series took place on 1 April 2025. Developed by UNESCO in collaboration with the Berghof Foundation, the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocity, Interpeace, and Search for Common Ground, the four-part briefs series draws on firsthand experience, case studies, and expert analysis to demonstrate the transformative potential of dialogue in conflict-sensitive settings. The panel discussion explored a wide range of critical issues addressed in the briefs, including how dialogue can navigate identity-based tensions, promote trauma-informed and healing-centred approaches, and integrate traditional, indigenous, and community-based mechanisms into formal peacebuilding efforts. Speakers reflected on the use of creative mediums—such as theatre, film, and art—for reconciliation and prevention, and discussed the potential of environmental peacebuilding and memorialization in fostering inclusive dialogue. The discussion also addressed the importance of youth engagement, intergenerational dialogue, and the empowerment of historically marginalized groups in shaping national peace processes. Additional themes included the evolving role of truth commissions, the need for locally owned initiatives, and effective methods for evaluating the impact of dialogue in conflict transformation.
