During May 2021, we released back into the wild no less than 12 birds, most of them birds of prey, which were successfully rehabilitated by BirdLife Malta. On 13th May 2021 we released a Marsh Harrier and two Common Kestrels on Comino. Four days later, on 17th May, we released a Little Bittern at our Simar Nature Reserve. On 19th May we released another two Common Kestrels at Għadira Nature Reserve, whilst on 20th May two Marsh Harriers were released back into the wild also at Għadira Nature Reserve, and an Eleonora's Falcon was released at Mellieħa. Finally, on 28th May, a Marsh Harrier, a Pallid Harrier and a Black Kite were released on Comino. Most of these birds had suffered gunshot injuries and were recovered by members of the public or police during this year’s spring migration. Others were found weak and stranded from migration whilst one particular bird – the Eleonora’s Falcon – had been under our care for more than a year. In fact it had been recovered in March 2020 with jesses on its legs; an indication it had been kept in captivity. The government vet also confirmed it had previously been shot. All the birds were ringed prior to their release. This video sums up BirdLife Malta's work with injured birds and their successful rehabilitation over the past spring season.
