We set out hoping to experience one of South Africa’s most extraordinary marine ecosystems — and it did not disappoint. Although the sharks were shy on this trip, the ocean was alive with movement and colour. We were surrounded by abundant seabirds, from cormorants sweeping low over the swells to terns diving for fish. Then came the moment that stopped us all: a mother whale and her tiny calf, gently surfacing and disappearing again into the deep — a reminder of how protected and precious these waters truly are. Around Geyser Rock, thousands of Cape fur seals filled the air with their barks and splashes, warming themselves on the rocks or porpoising through the waves. And, tucked quietly into the rocky edges of Dyer Island itself, we spotted two African penguins, perfectly camouflaged and watching us from their safe perch. Dyer Island may be off-limits to visitors, but seeing its wildlife from the water is a powerful experience — raw, authentic and deeply moving. If you’re travelling through the Overberg or Gansbaai area, this is a nature encounter you won’t forget. 👉 Subscribe for more Overberg adventures, nature walks, wildlife moments and hidden local stories.
