The 50-hour service is easy, and there really is no reason why you shouldn't keep on top of it. AFAIK, 50-hour service jobs offer the greatest return out of all mountain bike service jobs. The air spring service is easy. If you want, you can do it during the 50-hour service to keep the grease fresh (no need to change seals), and/or do it every 125-hours or annually to replace the seals.
