Starting the right fuel tank, from the very beginning. First up is clecoing the entire unit together, on the plane. The whole thing is removed and match-drilled on the bench and then several sub-units are fabricated: tank mounts, doubler plates, access hatches, holes, and flanges. I learn that these pieces take TIME! Soon enough, after copious amounts of dimpling, deburring, scuffing and cleaning, the tank sealant comes out. The same stuff I complained about before (now affectionately known as "tank taffy") will become my life for the next few days. This is part one of two that will take us up to the very end of sealing and testing the tanks. That last part will have to wait until there is a bit more time, and until I have the required parts for that step. These episodes teach me just how much work it is to create wet-wings, or sealed aluminum fuel tanks for a kit built airplane. Learn with me--and leave a comment telling me what you think of the work. I'd really enjoy it. ------------ I'm Ryan, an aviation enthusiast who has decided to build his own aircraft and publish the entire process online for others to watch along. The airplane is a two-person experimental kit built aluminum plane capable of over 200 miles per hour, and a range of nearly 700 miles. The kit is manufactured by Van's Aircraft, one of the most prolific kit providers on the planet. The airplane is aerobatic, functional, and fun. The build is challenging, time consuming, fun and rewarding. Check out my instagram @ryanflyspdx Also check out my new website, ryanflys.com.
