A comment many have made since the announcement of the new car, and it’s not one I disagree with! The G63 facelift sees minor exterior and interior design changes, and yes while #MercedesAMG give it that epic semi active suspension along with a much needed interior tech refresh - how much does it ACTUALLY matter for the purposes of having a G Wagon? I want to put forward the case that the reasons we love the G Wagon, are not actually the incremental updates that you find in a typical facelift. Rather, there’s some intangible that we love about these big boxy brutes, whether it’s the “Stronger than Time” design, the “kerchunk” of the doors, the strange driving style or the unique exhaust note… there’s an X factor here beyond the norm. Indeed, how much of the aesthetics of the facelift could you add yourself? Especially considering you can get one for almost half the price on the used market, will this make the Old one better for many of us? In this video, we’ll compare the old G63 with the new facelift model to answer that question. Why the Old G63 Still Stands Strong: For nearly half the price of the facelift, the old G63 retains 95% of what makes the G iconic: Standard versions are still technically identical (bar the mild hybrid) Design is unchanged - updates like AMG logos or bumpers can be added aftermarket. The doors still kerchunk. The exhaust note still roars. The commanding ladder chassis ride remains. The new G63 costs significantly more, especially with performance pack and Manufaktur options. Meanwhile, pre-facelift models (2019 onwards) can be found for as low as £109,000—a saving of nearly £100,000 compared to a new model! Driving Dynamics The facelift’s semi-active suspension undoubtedly improves cornering stability and comfort, it makes it a different experience and our full review of that car really shows this! The old G63 may lack this refinement, but its rawer, less composed nature could be part of its charm. I think that even if the Old G63 isn’t as easy to wrangle on a road: this may prove part of its ultimate charm. All performance SUVs are just less capable versions of their saloon counterparts — G Wagon sits as the exception, it’s not trying to mimic an E63 or set lap times, it’s their to make you smile and be slightly fearful while doing it all!
