Katharina Winkler’s debut novel tells the story of a Turkish girl who marries against her father's wishes, only to suffer such extreme abuse that she is driven to the brink of suicide. The poignant portrayal of her life deeply shakes the reader. The term Neela Zevar (blue jewelry) is used very deliberately. These "blue jewels" on women — the bruises — are seen as a mark of their husbands’ masculinity. Dr. Shipra Chaturvedi says: While translating the novel, one of the most important realizations was that human emotions and sensitivities are the same all over the world. In a patriarchal society, the life of a girl is dependent on others for even the smallest things. The novel paints a deeply moving picture of the many difficulties she faces, particularly due to her lack of education. A woman has no identity of her own. The protagonist feels that neither her body nor her mind belongs to her. Reading all this fills the heart with such sorrow and despair that the positive ending feels like a gentle, soothing breeze after a long storm of suffering. Turkish cuisine is mentioned at several places, and though translating those parts wasn’t easy, it was certainly fascinating.
