(27 May 1995) Natural Sound The Bosnian government declared Saturday a national day of mourning to mark the massacre in Tuzla of at least 71 people. Residents of Tuzla placed flowers at the site of Thursday's attack - the highest death toll from a single attack during the Bosnian conflict. In Sarajevo, a memorial service was held for 27 people who died in a mortar attack on a bread queue three years ago. Tuzla, so far largely escaping the carnage that has ravaged Bosnia, has now suffered the deadliest shelling of Bosnia's 3-year-old war. At least 71 people were killed and 151 wounded in the Serb shelling, although hospital officials say the figure was certain to rise because some of the more than 30 critically wounded were beyond saving. On this day of mourning, people gathered to lay wreaths, flowers and to pay respects to the victims of the Serb cluster bomb. The bomb exploded among a mostly teen-age crowd gathered outside a cafe. The Tuzla shelling set a grim record, accounting for three more dead than the Sarajevo marketplace massacre of Feb. 5, 1994 which prompted N-A-T-O to issue its initial air strike threats against Bosnian Serbs. But the scenes were sickeningly similar. In Sarajevo itself, people gathered to mourn the victims of another attack - this on a bread queue three years ago - that left 27 people dead.
