Aoraki Mt Cook, via Zurbriggen Ridge. On Nov 23rd 2025, we set out to climb a route that I've been dreaming of for years: the iconic Zurbriggen Ridge. It is a beautiful line up the massive east face of Aoraki, and makes for an exposed, calf-burning grind the whole way up. We were treated to 900m of firm front-pointing before we had to rope up for some mixed ice climbing needed to gain the ridge proper. A quick sunrise brew above the Linda Shelf, then we tackled the summit rocks, which were a tad lean and icy, but made for fun scrambling. Overall, our return time to Plateau hut was 19.5h, with over 2500m of elevation gain. *Small correction - height of Aoraki is 3724m, not 3274m. Apologies for the first couple of audio clips being a bit scratchy too. I better stop doing the the final reviews of these videos late at night. We met a handful of other parties on their way up the Linda route and joined forces with another group on the rappels down the summit rocks. Did I summit? Well, technically no. I stopped just shy of the high peak to respect the sacred nature of Aoraki's summit and the Ngai Tahu. Overall, we did 2500m of elevation gain over a 19.5h return time to Plateau Hut. Climbing an east face route on Aoraki / Mt Cook has always been a dream. Given the high objective and overhead hazards on this route, we’ve spent the last 3 years trying to time a window where all the conditions were just right. Our patience was rewarded with a truely serene sunrise on the East Face, and great firm conditions. Small moments all the previous attempts worth it. Big thanks to Jim for partnering up for this one.
