PENMAN is a safety acronym used by public safety personnel known as Rescuers. It is a verbal safety checklist that is stated when pre-planning response to an EMS call for service. PENMAN is an ever changing scene safety concept that follows rescuers throughout the day until the end of watch. P - Personal Protective Equipment E - Environmental, Biological and Human Hazards N - Number of Patients M - Mechanism of Injury / Nature of Illness A - Additional Resources N - Need for C-Spine / Neuro Exam DISCLAIMER: First and foremost, this video was created for the visually and hearing impaired audience in mind as we believe anyone should be able to learn. If there are any improvements, please feel free to comment, so that we can take your information under advisement. The training video is designed for Students, First Responders, and Emergency Medical Personnel. The training information provided in these videos are primarily designed for Emergency Medical Students that need a visual of the skill before attending their Skills Lab to practice and test. Every school, college, organization and agency may follow different training protocols, therefore adjustments may be made to fit the training and testing needs. The video is also designed for First Responders that need to "Refresh" their knowledge, skills and abilities to improve their performance out in the field. Whether you have the specific equipment, make-shift props, or simply observing, the video is designed for you to watch and then practice by following the instructions and repeating the information provided. Pausing the video is helpful, so that you may read instructional information and repeat for the purpose of memorizing key concepts. Notice that the displayed text and the instructor verbiage may not always match 100% of the time, because the idea is for you to formulate your own phraseology while hitting the key points as you speak. Although you are expected to know specific terminology, the manner in which you express them should feel natural to you when verbalizing it out loud to your classmates, proctor, co-workers and/or patient; especially if English is your second language. Always check with your EMS Instructor for feedback to ensure you follow current performance expectations.
