This video is primarily designed for the Prehospital Childbirth Rescuers. Most agencies stock their inventory with pre-made Obstetrics Kits and all of them include a bulb syringe for suctioning the neonates airway. In most cases, the bulb syringe will not suction much fluids, because there isn't much secretions to suction. However there will be smaller amounts of amniotic fluids on or about the airway orifice of the nose and mouth. Neonates are normally born with some fluids in their airway, which was present in the womb. Therefore it is expected to find secretions in their nose and mouth. Clearing the airway can be done in many ways; even gravity can help. Holding the newborn facing down briefly will allow gravity to drain fluids out if the airway naturally if a bulb syringe or towel isn't present. Wiping the airway is the latest school of thought, because most newborns have a small amount of fluids and can easily be wiped off. It is important to plan ahead and have a "sponge" such as a sterile towel, gauze, or some other type obsorbant materials that doesn't fall apart to do the job. If the amount of fluids is excessive or deep withing the airway, the bulb syringe is the best tool to clear the airway. Particularly if the newborn is going to immediately breast feed and the sound of crackling fluids are heard. Suction with the bulb syringe for a patent airway. In my observation, many EMS students handle the bulb syringe incorrectly. The student doesn't comprehend the suction mechanism and demonstrate it incorrectly during tests. Many instructors and students simulate the discarding of fluids in mid-air without care. POOR INSTRUCTION! POOR HABIT! This video should clarify best practices of clearing the neonates airway and use if the bulb syringe. Added footage included for Other Uses and Care of the bulb syringe!!!
