   / @wonderingdutchman1987   🌍 Walking Tour Exploring Oosterhout, Netherlands 🇳🇱 Join me on this beautiful walk through Oosterhout, North Brabant, Netherlands! I start my route in the Slotpark, where I visit the monument for fallen soldiers, then pass by the Abraham statue and walk across the grass field of the Parkfeest festival area. From there, I head into the city center, where I explore the Sint-Jansbasiliek (St. John’s Basilica) both inside and out. Finally, I continue through the scenic city park, past the municipal building, and end my journey by visiting the fallow deer in the park. 🏛️ History of the Sint-Jansbasiliek (St. John’s Basilica) The Sint-Jansbasiliek in Oosterhout has a long history dating back to at least 1277, when a Romanesque church stood on this site. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was replaced by a Gothic church, inspired by the Grote Kerk van Breda (Great Church of Breda). However, its tower was never fully completed, something I personally find quite unfortunate. During the Eighty Years' War, the church was taken over by Protestants but was returned to the Catholics in 1809 by King Louis Napoleon. Between 1881 and 1883, it was extensively restored by architect P.J.H. Cuypers, and in 1977, it was elevated to a basilica in honor of the 700th anniversary of the parish.
