Field trip out of the shop to check out some old architecture and climb a really long ladder. ⇊ Click "Show More" for lots more details! ⇊ I’m in downtown London, Ontario, and if you don’t know where that is, just imagine a straight line that goes from Detroit to Toronto, and London is pretty much exactly half way in between. We’re going to check out Talbot Street church in downtown London. It was built in 1881, condemned in the 1950s for structural problems and I’m going to go explore it’s 135 year old attic. So, WHY am I doing this? Well, first of all, I think old architecture can be pretty interesting. And also, who doesn’t like exploring the forbidden areas of an old building? Then there’s the fact that this building was condemned, but 60 years later it’s still here. What's up with that? We will start out front of the building. Then check out some of the features inside the sanctuary. This church features a large wrap-around balcony, with individual wooden theatre-style flip-up seating. The pews on the main floor are all curved — and as a woodworker I can imagine how much more difficult it was to build those instead of straight ones. Up in the attic we will see the cracked truss that was the main reason for the church being condemned. We’ll also see the repair and some various other features.
