The Italian Air Force National Aerobatic Team, 'Frecce Tricolori', celebrating their 65th year and performing on Sunday of The Royal International Air Tattoo 2025 at RAF Fairford, UK. Although the 'Frecce' usually display with 10 aircraft, this number was reduced to 9 for The Royal International Air Tattoo, as the team were recovering from a flying incident during May 2025 in Pantellaria, Italy during which three of their aircraft collided, were damaged and one of their pilots injured with a broken leg and further aircraft damage during the subsequent emergency landing, when an aircraft left the runway. The Frecce Tricolori ("Tricolour Arrows"), are officially known as the '313° Gruppo Addestramento Acrobatico, Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale (PAN) Frecce Tricolori' ('313th Aerobatic Training Group, National Aerobatic Team (PAN) Frecce Tricolori'), is the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force. They are based at Rivolto Air Base, in the province of Udine, Italy and were created on 1 March 1961 as a permanent group for the training of Air Force pilots in aerobatics. The Frecce Tricolori replaced unofficial teams that had been sponsored by various Italian Air Force units since the early 1930s. The team currently flies the Aermacchi MB-339-A/PAN(now designated AT-339A), a two-seat fighter-trainer aircraft capable of 898 km/h at sea level. With ten aircraft, nine in close formation and a soloist, they are the world's largest military aerobatic display team. Their full flight display comprises about twenty manoeuvres, lasts about half an hour and has made them one of the most famous teams in the world. They are one of the national symbols of Italy. The team began in 1961 on the Canadair Sabre, and transitioned to the Fiat G91 three years later. It was with the G91 that the Frecce first attended the Royal International Air Tattoo, then staged at Greenham Common, in 1976. Conversion to the agile MB339 took place prior to the 1982 season. The Frecce are renowned for the spectacle of their displays, during which the soloist in particular shows something of the MB339's exceptional manoeuvrability. It had been announced that the team would convert onto the M-345 HET (High Efficiency Trainer), but at the conclusion of the team's 2024 tour of The United States of America, it was instead revealed that they will now transition to the twin-engined Leonardo T-346A Master in 2028. The T-345 was not thought to be well suited to large team formation aerobatics, which would better benefit from the higher performance of the twin-engined T-346 Master, with higher thrust and greater manoeuvrability to maintain the quality and spectacle of their air displays.
