Glasnevin Cemetery, officially called Prospect Cemetery, was founded in 1832 by Irish political leader Daniel O’Connell. At the time, Catholics in Ireland had limited rights to bury their dead with proper religious rites, so O’Connell established Glasnevin as a non-denominational cemetery where people of all faiths—and none—could be buried with dignity. It began on a small plot of land in Dublin but expanded rapidly, eventually becoming Ireland’s largest cemetery. Today, more than 1.5 million people are buried there. The cemetery is famous for its impressive Victorian monuments, crypts, and towering O’Connell Round Tower, which honours its founder. Glasnevin also serves as the resting place of many major figures in Irish history, including Michael Collins, Éamon de Valera, Charles Stewart Parnell, Countess Markievicz, and numerous writers, revolutionaries, and cultural icons. It remains both a historic landmark and an active cemetery, with an on-site museum that tells the story of Ireland through the lives of those buried there. Welcome to Cemetery Walks with Miki.
