The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is continuing its review process for social grant beneficiaries suspected of having additional sources of income and not disclosing to the agency. Over 200 000 Sassa beneficiaries faced delays in their June grant payments due to income irregularities. The issue stems from a recent cross-check between the agencies system and registered credit bureaus, which revealed that around 210 000 grant recipients may be earning income they didn't declare when applying for their grants. This raises red flags under the Social Assistance Act, which requires applicants to truthfully disclose all sources of income and to report any changes to their financial situation after approval. In response to this, the agency initiated a review which is intended to ensure continued eligibility and prevent misuse of funds.
