*BYOL — *Bootstrap Your Own Latent** BYOL takes a bold step in self-supervised learning by discarding what contrastive methods considered essential: *negative samples**. Instead of comparing an image against others, BYOL trains two networks—an *online network and a slowly updated target network—and asks the online network to predict the target’s representation of another augmented view of the same image. The asymmetry is the trick. A momentum update keeps the target network stable, while a predictor head prevents the system from collapsing into trivial solutions. Surprisingly, this simple “predict yourself” objective is enough to learn rich, transferable visual representations—often matching or surpassing contrastive methods. BYOL’s message is quietly radical: representation learning does not require explicit contrast or labels. With the right architectural bias and training dynamics, AI can bootstrap meaningful structure entirely from itself.
