In this episode, we journey from Tasmania’s wild West Coast through the heart of the Tasmania to reach the stunning East Coast and our booking for Maria Island. After tackling the famous '99 Bends' out of Strahan, we travel through the rugged mountains to the historic mining town of Queenstown. It’s incredible—and confronting—to see how the landscape is still scarred from mining activities dating back to the 1800s. We hike the Horsetail Falls Track, which winds dramatically up the mountainside and offers some of the most breath-taking views of our trip so far! Next, we stop at the Derwent Bridge Wilderness Hotel, which has just reopened after six months of renovations. We enjoy an epic pub meal and make use of the free camping out the back—highly recommended! The following morning, we visit The Wall in the Wilderness, a spectacular wood-carved art installation (no photos allowed—but trust us, it’s a must-see!). After a quick stop at Lawrenny Distillery for a tasting, we continue on to Brighton, staying overnight at the low-cost Pontville RV Park. Just around the corner is Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, home to one of Australia’s only albino yellow-tailed black cockatoos. It’s the perfect place to get up close with some of Tasmania’s most iconic wildlife. We finish this leg of our trip on Tasmania’s stunning East Coast, arriving at Triabunna, ready for our adventure to Maria Island.
