“Fanny's Botanical Specimen Collection in the Pringle Herbarium: A Look at Science, Art, and Daily Life in the Early Republic” by David Barrington, Former Director, Pringle Herbarium at the University of Vermont This presentation was given as the keynote address of the Chittenden County Historical Society's 60th Annual Meeting on August 16, 2025 at the Ethan Allen Homestead in Burlington, Vermont. Fanny Montresor Buchanan Allen Penniman was a strong 18th-century woman, and co-authored the oldest known book of botany created in Vermont, now in storage at the Pringle Herbarium at the University of Vermont. She was also a strong mother to eight children, six of which spent at least some of their childhood here on Fanny's Burlington homestead. Fanny was intelligent, creative, resourceful, and persistent. In Fanny's honor, we are hosting a full weekend all about Fanny, plants & flowers, and family fun. This presentation was part of the History Alive!, a weekend-long celebration of local history and culture, co-hosted by the Chittenden County Historical Association and the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum, which took place on Fanny's Weekend August 16-17, 2025. Program partners included: Heritage Winooski Mill Museum, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Alnôbaiwi, Lost Mural Project, Birds of Vermont Museum, Gary Irish, Abenaki Helping Abenaki, Vermont State Archives, UVM Silver Special Collections Library, Vermont Historical Society, Vermont Abenaki Artists Association, Essex Community Historical Society, Vermont Historical Records Program, Jessie Haas, Westminster Historical Society, Vermont Archaeology Society, Vermont Abenaki Arts & Education Center, Burlington History & Culture Center, & Winooski Historical Society.
