When you think of tailgating, you may think of grills, burgers and beer. You may not think cheese, crackers and fine wine. Visit the parking lot of the Santa Fe Opera before a performance, and you'll see the latter. Joyce Idema, the press relations person for the opera, says what started as necessity -- people wanting to grab a quick bite before the opera, which lies a few miles north of Santa Fe and away from easily accessible restaurants -- has now become tradition. You'll meet Dawn Matthews who's visiting the area with her parents, Dick and Barb Kinas, from Texas. You'll also meet Kerry and Karla Lowery, locals who are trying tailgating for their first time. After experiencing the warm summer evening and watching the sun set beyond the theater, I'll be going back with my own picnic basket filled with sophisticated goodies.
