Discover the Battle of Firebase Illingworth, the brutal night-long defense on April 1, 1970, where approximately 220 American soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division fought off an estimated 400-1,000 North Vietnamese attackers using sappers, mortars, and human wave assaults designed to overrun the isolated firebase in Tay Ninh Province. The assault began with heavy mortar and RPG bombardment destroying vehicles, ammunition supplies, and defensive positions, followed by NVA sappers breaching the perimeter wire and attacking command bunkers with satchel charges while massed infantry assaults attempted to overwhelm American positions through sheer numbers. The fighting was desperate and close-quarters. American soldiers fought hand-to-hand when enemy troops penetrated defensive lines, threw back grenades lobbed into bunkers, and held positions while massive artillery and aerial bombardment pounded attacking NVA forces. Specialist Peter Lemon, manning an M60 machine gun, fought for hours despite being wounded three times—killing an estimated 20+ NVA soldiers, destroying his position then continuing to fight with rifles when weapons were damaged, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat when enemies reached his position. His actions earned the Medal of Honor, though he remains controversial as the only recipient who publicly admitted being under the influence of marijuana during the battle. By dawn, the NVA assault collapsed with American forces counting approximately 54 enemy bodies on the firebase and intelligence estimates placing total casualties between 200-400 killed or wounded. American losses were 24 killed and 54 wounded—heavy but far less catastrophic than would have occurred if the firebase had been overrun. Firebase Illingworth proved that determined defenders with artillery support could defeat numerically superior forces, but also demonstrated the constant vulnerability of isolated American positions throughout Vietnam. #FirebaseIllingworth #220vs400 #April1970 #PeterLemon #1stCavalry #NightBattle #VietnamWar #Documentary #MedalOfHonor #NVA #closequarters
