Impressionistic Sebright Rooster in Acrylics - Live Acrylic Tutorial with Ginger Cook Get your brushes ready! Join the "Gold Standard" of acrylic painting, Ginger Cook, for a fun, step-by-step live painting lesson. 🎨 ABOUT THIS LESSON: In this live broadcast, we will be tackling a beautiful new subject in acrylics. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, you will learn techniques for color mixing, brushwork, and composition. Key ideas that stand out • How to simplify a detailed Sebright rooster photo into an impressionistic “kitchen painting” with loose background and a more realistic, detailed head to “trick the brain.” • Emphasis on building a strong background first (buff titanium, mossy greens, warm browns), using big “smudgy” brushes, thick paint, and mostly downward strokes before ever adding the bird. • Clear layering strategy for the rooster: dark shapes and feather masses first, then mid tones, then bright accents and final titanium white highlights to make colors pop. • Strong focus on value and contrast: placing darks under the body and around the feet, light against dark on the chest spots and neck feathers, and a very light head/comb area to become the focal point. • Detailed head demo: resting the hand, using a small detail brush, carefully building the comb, wattle, eye, and beak with magenta red mixtures and purples, and adding the catch light last. • Practical beginner tips: working without excess water, using matte medium if you are slow, understanding drying between layers, and glazing back the chest spots with thinned burnt sienna instead of heavy mediums. • Design advice: avoiding a busy reference background, asking “What can I take away and not ruin the effect?”, and using framing and varnish to finish the piece. Paints Used • Titanium white (standard heavy body and fluid) • Buff titanium (or mix: yellow ochre + white) • Yellow ochre (also called yellow oxide) • Raw sienna • Raw umber • Burnt umber • Burnt sienna • Mars black • Phthalo blue • Ultramarine blue • Magenta (used for comb, wattle, and purples) • Cad red light • Cad red medium • Pyro red / Naphthol crimson type strong red • Cad orange • Cad yellow light • Cad yellow medium Ginger also mixed: • Payne’s gray mixture: ultramarine blue + black (for chest and shadow areas) • Olive/moss greens: black + cad yellow light + raw sienna or burnt umber; also ultramarine blue + yellow for a softer green. 🗓️ WHEN WE GO LIVE: We broadcast live on YouTube!
