Whether you are officially diagnosed with autism or not, you could be set on the path to discovering this facet of yourself. This was me 3 years ago. My first response was denial--I am 'normal'. However, I remained open minded, and I'm glad I spent the time to learn what autism is, how it can be identified through behaviours and experiences, and how I have been impacted by being undiagnosed. In this video, I talk about autism and how I am putting my entire craft experience into perspective. I have been drawn to hand spinning and dyeing for many years and I enjoy the creativity it gives me. It's also easy for me to be consistent and predictable, and that has given me control in life where the chaos of everything else leads to anxiety, overwhelm, burn out, meltdowns, and shutdowns. I have talked with a GP about getting a diagnosis and I am now on the waiting list. I would like to use this podcast as a therapeutic outlet where I can discuss crafting topics, or adjacent ones, that might be considered peripheral to hand spinning and the other tutorials I have made. I need to be authentic and talk about the stuff I still don't fully understand (usually because it doesn't seem logical to me). It's a learning process! I also hope to include my testimonial about being autistic and how it has made me feel, what I have learned through discussions with other autistic people, observations I have made of my own life history, and why I am so drawn to fiber arts and archaeology.
