On this day in 1892, English poet, gardener and passionate lover Vita Sackville-West was born. Vita was also well known for her passionate relationships, including her celebrated affair with modernist novelist Virginia Woolf, which inspired Woolf’s novel Orlando. Vita Sackville-West lived a remarkable life. Married to diplomat, writer, and politician Harold Nicolson, she was known for their unusually open but deeply devoted marriage. Together, they created one of England’s most beautiful gardens at Sissinghurst Castle Garden, which remains famous today. Today’s poem is a fragment by the ancient Greek poet Sappho, writing on the island of Lesbos around 600 BC.
