There are many words in English that have silent letters. Be careful when pronouncing these words. The doubling rule in spelling, often called the "1-1-1 Rule," says to double the final consonant of a short word when adding a vowel suffix (like -ing, -ed, -er) if the base word has one syllable, one short vowel, and ends in one consonant.
