Today's update report is for the Borovoa direction. Here the Russians launched hasty counterattacks to try to stop the advance of the 3rd Brigade. However, the attack failed disastrously when the Ukrainian units turned the assault into a massacre, destroying half of a battalion in a single day. The Ukrainians' aim is to undermine the Russian spring offensive towards Borova and Lyman by launching a counterattack to eliminate the Russian bridgehead on the Zherebets, which the Russians plan to use to launch their offensive. The Russians have realized the criticality of the situation and have therefore launched hasty responses along the front to stop the Ukrainians. Due to the lack of armor, the Russian forces are forced to use mostly infantry, saving their limited vehicle reserves for the final offensive. Additionally, the marshy banks and lack of crossing points forced the Russians to use improvised pontoons, which were only usable by infantry. However, due to the proximity of these pontoons to the Ukrainian lines, they were spotted, targeted and destroyed almost immediately. This prevented the Russians from moving large numbers of soldiers along the river, resulting in a lack of sufficient forces to carry out overwhelming assaults. Furthermore, the sudden appearance of these improvised pontoons alerted the Ukrainians and sensing that an attack was imminent, the 3rd Assault Brigade prepared appropriate countermeasures. Looking at the battlefield we can see that there are a few interconnected tree-lines leading from the Russian lines to the Ukrainian positions. However, the 3rd has established a strong defense in the area, blocking and directly preventing any Russian infiltration, as proven by all the thwarted Russian attempts in the past months. For this reason, Russian commanders decided to launch their attacks across open fields, assuming that, while still high, losses would be less than facing the Ukrainian defenses head on. To avoid immediate and complete destruction, Russian soldiers used tactics specifically designed to reduce losses from drone attacks, maintaining large distances from each other and only moving in groups of two. This was to minimize the risk of mass casualties in a single strike by forcing the Ukrainians to use multiple drones and increasing the chances that some would make it across the fields. Unfortunately for them, the Ukrainians had plenty of drones in reserve, as demonstrated by this video series that captures nearly 100 different attacks. Furthermore, since they were dealing with purely infantry attacks, Ukrainian forces used much smaller, faster, and more agile drones that were still capable of carrying enough explosives to disable Russian soldiers. The Ukrainians also used reconnaissance drones to observe the effectiveness of the suicide drones and equipped them with grenades to finish the job if necessary. These drones were also used to scout targets, increasing the effectiveness of the defense. During the assault, the Russians lost more than 229 soldiers, about half a battalion, in a single day. During the entire week of operations by the 3rd, 446 soldiers, 16 artillery pieces, dozens of vehicles in the rear and 10 improvised pontoons were eliminated. Overall, the 3rd Brigade managed to thwart Russian attempts to save its bridgehead, allowing for a continued push to eliminate and clean up what remains of the Russian presence in the area. With the crossing points destroyed, the Russians have been forced to use what remains of their forces in the headland for suicide attacks and the defenses will be weakened. The Ukrainians will then be able to exploit these weaknesses to finish the operation before the Russians can send in reinforcements.
