People in costumes taking part in traditional dances STORYLINE: Hundreds of Catholics in Mexico City celebrated Candlemas on Monday, bringing their baby Jesus figurines to a special Mass to be blessed. Mexicans restore their baby Jesus figurines in time for Candlemas, on February 2, the Catholic feast marking the end of Christmas celebrations that commemorates the Virgin Mary’s purification and Jesus’ presentation at the temple. Faithful often keep the figurines during the Christmas season in Nativity scenes displayed in homes, and on Candlemas they take them to church to be blessed. The tradition takes place across Mexico City. For Georgina Castillo, who attended the Mass on Monday, her baby Jesus statues have been passed down through the generations by her family. "My baby Jesus is made of wood; my mother, may she rest in peace, bequeathed it to me," she said, adding that she, in turn, gave a baby Jesus to her daughter. Castillo, accompanied by a stroller where several figurines of the baby Jesus rest, emphasized how the tradition was "important for family unity."
