To the west of the Italian village of Bardonecchia in the upper Susa Valley in the Cottian Alps lies the 2805 metre high mountain Monte Jafferau, on which a summit fort was built at the end of the 19th century. There are other military fortifications on this mountain massif (e.g. Forte Föens, Forte al Seguret, Forte Pramand and Forte Fenil), which are all connected by a network of military roads. There are therefore four access routes to the summit fort on Mont Jafferau. 1. This ascent uses the supply routes of the ski area on the west side of Mont Jafferau and is the shortest but also the steepest. In good weather, the route is easy to navigate uphill. Downhill and in bad weather, the route can be challenging. The route starts at the ‘Savoia Mountain Resort’ hotel about 7 kilometres east of Bardonecchia. 2. Shortly before the hotel ‘Savoia Mountain Resort’ about 7 km east above Bardonecchia, the access road to Forte Föens branches off in a left-hand serpentine. After approx. 4.5 km, the road continues past Forte Föens in a westerly direction. After a further 7.5 km, you will reach Col Basset. 3. Heading north from the village of Savoulx, a rather steep and winding serpentine road leads up the mountain. After about 11.5 kilometres, you reach the link between Forte Föens and Col Basset, which you reach after another 6 kilometres. 4. From Fenils (Forte Fenil), a village north-east of the town of Salbertrand, a military road initially leads in the direction of Colle del Pramand. However, the road then continues northwards past Forte Pramand. You come to the 850 metre long Galleria del Seguret and then the Forte al Seguret. From here, the route continues to Col Basset, which is reached after a total of around 17 kilometres. At Col Basset (not Colle Basset on the Strada dell'Assietta) you have reached a suitable altitude and the path leads in a westerly direction as a mountain road to the ‘Baraccamento della Colletta Jafferau’ barracks. There is only a short ascent to cover from here. The distance from Col Basset to the fort is about 4.5 kilometres. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and all public holidays, it is forbidden for motor vehicles to drive up to Forte Jafferau. The ban applies to access roads 1 and 2 from the ‘Savoia Mountain Resort’ hotel. The ascent from Savoulx is completely prohibited on these days and the fourth ascent is prohibited from the turn-off to Forte Pramand. Ascent to Forte Jafferau is therefore only permitted on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The ascent 4 described here is about 22 kilometres long and generally easy to drive uphill and downhill. Only the passage through the Galleria del Seguret, an 850 metre long unlit tunnel, requires some concentration and caution. The road is located in the Italian province of Torino in the Piedmont region. ▬ Content ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 Intro 00:15 Prolog 01:32 The Ride 46:29 And the Mavic spoke... 50:31 Outro ▬ Links ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Playlist Italy: • Italy / Italien Playlist Passes: • Passes / Pässe WalkTheMavic: / @walkthemavic4197 ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Walk The Mavic (WTM) - Interesting roads, passes and gorges in the Alps - Nature and landscapes - Castles, forts, fortresses and fortifications - Photos and videos, if possible and allowed, also aerial photos/videos with the drone.
