At the end of the 19th century, Fort Viraysse (2720 meters) was built on the Tête de Viraysse to provide a direct view of Italy and thus prevent a feared attack. The barracks (Baraquement de Viraysse) belonging to the fort can be found to the north-west of the fort at an altitude of around 2470 meters. Just above the barracks is the Col de Malemort at an altitude of 2560 meters. The fort and the barracks were abandoned around 1940. Access to the Viraysse barracks is possible from the village of Saint-Ours. Saint-Ours lies above the village of Meyronnes, which can be found on the north-west ramp of the Col de Larche (D900). Shortly after the village of Saint-Ours, the path changes to an easy gravel road. After about 2 kilometres, you come to a very sharp turn-off to the left, which then continues to the barracks. From here, the path becomes increasingly steeper and rougher until, after about 1 km, you reach an area with very steep, very narrow hairpin bends covered with coarse and loose gravel, which has pushed many a driver to their limits. At this point, there are 13 tight hairpin bends with gradients of up to 16%. Once you have mastered this key section, the valley opens up to the south-east. The road is no better here, but it is nowhere near as steep and narrow. The entire ascent to the barracks is around 7.5 km long. At the beginning of 2023, the area around the Col de Mallemort was declared a nature reserve and is now also part of the Parc national de Mercantour. Since August 2023, access to the area by motorised vehicles has been completely prohibited without exception. The regulation applies from the sharp turn-off ‘Pres Du Jas’ about 2 km after the village of Saint-Ours. The road is located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. ▬ Content ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 Intro 00:15 Prolog 01:22 The Ride 22:29 And the Mavic spoke... 26:31 Outro ▬ Links ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Playlist France: • France / Frankreich Playlist Passes: • Passes / Pässe WalkTheMavic: / @walkthemavic4197 ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Walk The Mavic (WTM) - Interesting roads, passes and gorges in the Alps - Nature and landscapes - Castles, forts, fortresses and fortifications - Photos and videos, if possible and allowed, also aerial photos/videos with the drone.
