She studied piano and composition in Christiania, Berlin, Florence, and Weimar, where she studied with Liszt. Prolific as a composer of piano music and vocal repertoire, she was a celebrated pianist throughout Europe. George Bernard Shaw considered Backer Grøndahl to be one of the 19th Century's greatest pianists. She was close friends with Edvard Grieg, and performed his famous piano concerto often.
