Here is Shirley Bassey's performance at the Royal Variety show at the London Palladium in 1987. There was much music to delight the audience, provided by artists James Galway, Shirley Bassey, the sensual Eartha Kitt, and an extract from the Phantom of the Opera with Sarah Brightman. Firm believers in self-censorship, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, cleaned up their act to save the Queen from any embarrassment. Taken out of the act was a four letter word and jokes about sex. "We don't necessarily believe Her Majesty would take any offence, but we would hate to cause her any embarrassment," said Stephen Fry.
