This video shows you how to replace the key fob battery on your 2016-2017 Volkswagen Tiguan. If your range is getting shorter or you’re seeing the "Key Battery Low" warning on your dashboard, this is a simple 2-minute fix. While some later VW models moved to a different fob, the 2017 Tiguan typically uses the classic "flip-key" style remote. This repair was performed on a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan and applies to: 2012-2017 Volkswagen Tiguan (Global) (Also applies to similar years of the VW Golf, Jetta, and Passat using the flip-key fob) Parts & Specifications Battery Type: CR2032 (3V Lithium Coin Cell) Note: Some European or regional variants may use a thinner CR2025. Check the engraving on your old battery before installing the new one. Tools Needed: A small flathead screwdriver or a sturdy coin. No Reprogramming Required: Your car will remember the key sync even after the battery is removed. Steps Covered Flip the Key: Press the silver button to eject the metal key blade. Open the Case: Look at the space where the key blade normally sits. Insert your thumb or a flathead screwdriver into the seam and pry the back cover upward. Remove the Battery: Use a small screwdriver to gently pop the old coin cell out of its housing. Install the New Battery: Slide the new CR2032 in with the (+) Positive side facing UP (the side with the writing should be visible). Snap it Shut: Align the back cover and press down firmly until it clicks back into place. Pro Tip: If your car has push-button start and the battery dies completely, you can still start the engine by holding the key fob directly against the right side of the steering column (where a traditional ignition switch would be) while pressing the Start button!
