Pisa is a charming Tuscan city, and is world-renowned for its iconic Leaning Tower in the "Square of Miracles" (Piazza dei Miracoli), which also features a stunning cathedral, baptistery, and cemetery. Beyond this, it is a historic, walkable city, once a powerful maritime republic and home to Galileo, offering scenic Arno riverfronts, lively university culture, and rich medieval architecture. The origin of the name, Pisa is a mystery. We walked the city and enjoyed the Arno River which is lined with palaces and empties into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The tower began leaning due to unstable soil, with construction spanning roughly 100 years, allowing the soil to settle, which prevented an early collapse. Attempts to fix the lean, including adding heavier bells and drilling, often made the tilt worse until stabilization efforts in the 1990s. Legend says the famous scientist used the tower to experiment with gravity, dropping items from the top. Music: The Open Road by John Rudzinskas.
