From Rome, we took a smooth drive past the Chianti hills to Florence, home of the Renaissance. Florence is the capital of Italy's Tuscany region. We went with a local guide to the magnificent Florence Cathedral, Giotto's Bell Tower, the Bapistry's heavy bronze "Gate of Paradise", sculpture studded Signoria Square and Michelangelo's celebrated David in the Academy of Fine Arts. The Florence Cathedral's terra cotta dome engineered by Brunelleschi and bell tower designed by Giotto is something to see as is Ponte Vecchio which spans the Arno River. At the heart of the city, in Piazza della Signoria, is Bartolomeo Ammanati's Fountain of Neptune. This masterpiece of marble sculpture is at the terminus of a still functioning Roman aqueduct. One of the bridges on the River Arno stands out - the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), whose most striking feature is the multitude of shops built upon its edges, held up by stilts. It is the only bridge in the city that survived WW2. Music: Renaissance Dreams and Gelato Streams by John Rudzinskas.
