Running from the southwest towns of Pemberton to Northcliffe, this section of railway was built during the great depression through a rain forest. As such, it cost a tremendous amount of money to snake through the dense environment full of waterways. It was so costly, that it took the crown of being the most expensive railway line per mile during construction. Services (both commercial and passenger) was cancelled in the 1980s, but the Pemberton Tramway Company immediately took the reins and created a ride for tourists. They still operate today, although only from Pemberton to the Cascades as the line gets lost to the brush further down the track. In this video, we follow the 36km span of heritage listed track between the towns (including on the tram) and discover what remains today.
