Guadalupe fescue (Festuca ligulata Swallen) is a critically endangered grass species, found only in the Sky Islands of the Sierra Madre Oriental of northern Coahuila, Mexico, and Texas, USA. The plant is highly vulnerable to extinction because of low abundance, few isolated populations, and strict habitat requirements. Guadalupe fescue was listed as endangered under the USA Endangered Species Act in 2017 and is a species of conservation concern in Mexico. We’ll present the results of our work aimed at conserving this species, including (1) searches for new populations indicated in historical records, (2) monitoring demography in field populations, (3) examining the impact of fire on Guadalupe fescue in Big Bend National Park, Texas, (4) developing protocols for collecting and germinating seeds, and (5) carrying out field augmentation of populations with greenhouse grown seedlings. We’ll also reflect on the power of binational collaboration in addressing conservation challenges.
