In this episode of Vet in a Van, we leave the coast and head into the heart of Tasmania’s Midlands to explore fascinating convict history, breathtaking waterfalls, and a truly unique rail adventure. Our first stop is Campbell Town, a charming village rich in convict heritage and home to Australia’s oldest surviving brick arch bridge – the iconic Red Bridge, designed by convict-engineer James Blackburn. The town also features beautiful chainsaw wood carvings that celebrate its colonial past. From there, we continue to the historic town of Oatlands, where we explore the lovingly restored Carrington Mill and enjoy a relaxed afternoon of whisky and gin tasting at the Carrington Distillery. Next, we head into the wilderness of Mount Field National Park and take on the stunning Lady Barron Falls Circuit, which leads us through temperate rainforest past Russell Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Lady Barron Falls. Russell Falls might just be the most beautiful waterfall in all of Tasmania! We even spot some glow worms lighting up the forest that night. Before returning to Oatlands, we had to check out Railtrack Riders in Maydena, where we pedalled along a section of disused railway line through lush forest – a fun, scenic and family-friendly adventure that’s well worth doing!
