Start: Reshui Town Finish: Hexigten World Geological Park On this trip, we driving on the Re-A Line—one of Inner Mongolia's most spectacular back-country roads. The route sits in Hexigten Banner, right where the Mongolian Plateau, the southern end of the Greater Khingan Range, and the Hunshandake Sandlands all meet. Locals call this wedge of land the “Golden Triangle of the Steppe.” The Re-A Line runs just 50 miles, but it packs every Inner-Mongolian landscape into that short stretch. We start in Reshui Town, famous for its 180-degree hot-spring water, then climb over the highest ridge of the Greater Khingans—Huanggang Peak at 6,650 feet—before dropping into the eastern edge of the endless Gonggeer Grassland. One minute you're in dense larch and birch forest, the next you're looking at a sea of grass dotted with herds of horses and cattle and a silver ribbon of river winding through it all. We finish at the Asihatu Stone Forest, a maze of granite spires that looks like something straight out of a Western movie set. Buckle up—this is Mongolia in miniature, and it's about to be one heck of a ride. Hope you like it.
