Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Monday has launched a scathing attack on the State Government in the wake of the recent coal mine mishap at Thangsko, alleging deep-rooted complicity and a “well-scripted modus operandi” that has allowed illegal coal mining and transportation to flourish in Meghalaya. Addressing the media, Sangma said that despite repeated instances where NGOs, political parties and opposition leaders have raised concerns about rampant illegal coal mining, the government has failed to instill a sense of fear of law among perpetrators. “The sense of fear of law is extremely important. In its absence, and by repeatedly denying what is happening on the ground, it amounts to a predetermined strategy that allows illegal activities to continue. When law enforcement fails, perpetrators only become more emboldened,” he said. Sangma asserted that evidence of illegal coal mining and transportation has grown in scale over the years and is now “proof beyond doubt” that illegalities were allowed to expand unchecked. “Illegalities of this scale cannot take place unless there is either gross negligence or deep-rooted complicity. The magnitude itself reflects how long and how systematically these activities were allowed to continue,” he alleged. Referring to the reports submitted by the committee headed by Justice (Retd.) B.P. Katakey, Sangma said the 35 reports already submitted are “self-explanatory” and reflect the quantum and seriousness of violations taking place in the coal sector.
