The President of the Voice of the People Party, Ardent Basaiawmoit, has stated that the party needs time to carefully study the review concerning the Reservation Policy. He asserted that if the review is found acceptable, the party and its supporters will welcome and celebrate the decision. However, if it fails to address the core concerns of the people, they will strongly oppose it. Expressing dissatisfaction over the functioning of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Basaiawmoit alleged that the Assembly is not being conducted in a fair and democratic manner. He emphasised that the Government is accountable to the Assembly, and the Opposition must be given a fair opportunity to raise public issues and critically analyse the claims made by the Government. According to him, Opposition members are frequently prevented from raising important matters through the application of procedural rules. He also criticised the short duration of Assembly sessions, stating that several serious issues affecting the people of the state have not been adequately discussed. He alleged that whenever members of the Opposition raise sensitive matters, the ruling side becomes unnecessarily agitated, leading to disruptions inside the House. On the demand for the Inner Line Permit (ILP), Basaiawmoit said the Chief Minister appears “fed up” with even hearing the term ILP. He referred to a Presidential Order that removed the reference to Khasi and Jaintia Hills from the ILP framework’s preamble, arguing that this has weakened the constitutional protection of the indigenous people. He further accused the Government of failing in its approach to the ILP issue. According to him, during negotiations, the State Government merely gave the Centre an option and claimed that the proposal was being “explored,” which he termed as misleading. “You cannot fool the people,” he asserted, adding that the Government must adopt a firm and transparent stand rather than making symbolic gestures.
