The first day of the Budget Session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) witnessed a sharp exchange between Leader of Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne and Executive Member Denzil Raynard Chen over the delay in appointing a full-fledged Syiem of Hima Sohra. Chyne questioned why an official letter had referred to Maremdor Syiem as “Deputy Chief (Syiem Khynnah)” despite Chen’s earlier statement on Doordarshan that the Executive Committee (EC) does not recognise the Deputy Syiem post without its approval. In response, Chen clarified that any such reference could have been a clerical error and reiterated that under the law, appointment of a Deputy Syiem requires EC approval. Chyne, however, demanded accountability if it was indeed a mistake, leading to a heated verbal exchange between the two members. Laban-Mawprem MDC Ricky Shullai and KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana intervened, urging members to maintain decorum. Raising concerns over the prolonged delay, Chyne said the issue has caused public concern in Sohra and sought clarity on when a full-fledged Syiem would be appointed. He noted that although the traditional process was completed and a successor selected, the Sanad has not been issued. Chen denied committing to any specific timeline and stated that the Act allows the Council to appoint an Acting Chief to ensure continuity. He maintained that the decision was in accordance with the law and assured that efforts are being made to complete the process at the earliest.
